Vivah Sanskar — An Overview

Vivah Sanskar is one of the most sacred of all 16 Vedic Sanskars. At Arya Samaj Mandir Punjabi Bagh (West), the marriage ceremony is conducted strictly according to Vedic rites with havan (sacred fire), Vedic mantras, and the Saptapadi — the seven holy steps that bind two souls in a lifelong commitment.

Understanding this Vedic Ceremony

Vivah Sanskar in Arya Samaj is performed in front of the sacred fire (Agni). The couple takes the Saptapadi — seven vows before Agni as a witness — pledging faith, love, support, prosperity, family, harmony, and lifelong companionship. There are no elaborate rituals, dowry demands, or wasteful customs. The ceremony is simple, dignified, and deeply spiritual.

आर्य समाज में विवाह संस्कार पवित्र अग्नि के समक्ष किया जाता है। वर और वधू अग्नि को साक्षी मानकर सप्तपदी लेते हैं — सात वचन जिनमें विश्वास, प्रेम, साथ, समृद्धि, परिवार, सद्भाव और जीवनपर्यंत साथ का प्रण होता है। इसमें कोई जटिल रीति-रिवाज, दहेज की मांग या व्यर्थ की रस्में नहीं होतीं।

Why It Matters

The Vedas consider marriage a divine covenant, not merely a social contract. By performing Vivah Sanskar before Agni and under Vedic chants, the couple invites divine blessings for a harmonious, prosperous, and spiritually fulfilling life together. The ceremony is also legally valid under the Special Marriage Act / Arya Marriage Validation Act.

Swagat (Welcome) — Priest welcomes families and introduces the ceremony.
स्वागत — पंडित जी परिवारों का स्वागत करते हैं और समारोह का परिचय देते हैं।

Sankalp (Pledge) — The couple declares their intent to marry before the assembly.
संकल्प — वर और वधू सभा के समक्ष विवाह का संकल्प लेते हैं।

Kanya Daan — The bride's parents symbolically give their daughter to the groom.
कन्यादान — वधू के माता-पिता प्रतीकात्मक रूप से अपनी पुत्री वर को सौंपते हैं।

Vivah Havan — Sacred fire is kindled and both perform havan with Vedic mantras.
विवाह हवन — पवित्र अग्नि प्रज्वलित की जाती है और दोनों वैदिक मंत्रों के साथ हवन करते हैं।

Saptapadi (Seven Vows) — The couple takes seven steps around the sacred fire, each step representing a lifelong vow.

Please arrange the following items before the ceremony. Our pandit will guide you on exact quantities.

  • Havan Samagri (provided by mandir)

  • Flowers — Marigold garlands (var mala)

  • New clothes for bride & groom

  • ID proofs of both parties (Aadhaar / Passport)

Is Arya Samaj marriage legally valid? क्या आर्य समाज विवाह कानूनी रूप से मान्य है?

Yes. Arya Samaj Vivah is legally valid under the Arya Marriage Validation Act 1937. You also receive a marriage certificate signed by the mandir authorities, which is accepted for visa and other official purposes.

Can inter-caste or inter-religion couples get married here? क्या अंतरजातीय या अंतरधार्मिक जोड़े यहाँ विवाह कर सकते हैं?

Yes. Arya Samaj strongly opposes caste discrimination. All couples regardless of caste are welcome. For inter-religion marriages, please contact us to discuss the process.

The mandir can comfortably accommodate up to 50–80 guests. For larger gatherings, please inform us in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.

Aadhaar card / Passport (both parties), 2 passport-size photos each, age proof, and 2 witnesses (with IDs). We will guide you through the documentation.
